According to the CDC, 11 percent of all American children ages 4-17 have been diagnosed with attention deficit disorder (ADHD), and the number has grown in the last decade. With more and more children and their parents, handling ADHD in their daily lives, effective coping methods are necessary for their success now and later in life. Dr. Trish Leigh suggests neurofeedback as a safe and proven method to help children with ADHD, and offers courses for parents to learn more.

How Neurofeedback Works

Neurofeedback is a kind of Neurotherapy that looks at a patient’s brain waves as they appear and then train the brain through a variety of “game” that uses visual and auditory cues. It tries to understand how each mind is wired, where it is not working correctly or harming the patient, and, over time, rewires the brain to help the patient with a neurological or mental health issue.

Patients portray it as playing a video game with your eyes, ears, and brain. As you “play,” you are trying to switch up your mind’s usual activities, and when you succeed, you hear a sound or see something that signals a reward.

Helping Your Child Handle ADHD

If your child has ADHD, then their frontal lobe will likely show a specified behavioral pattern that’s linked to their ADHD. Through neurofeedback, the practitioner examines these patterns in your child’s brain waves and then will ask them to perform a task through the “game,” which will, in theory, change those brain waves.

In this way, neurofeedback can change your child’s behavior over time, improving the symptoms of ADHD and allowing them to handle it better and perform better in school, social situations, and life in general.

You can also help your child when you apply neurofeedback to yourself. Understanding how to speak to and act with your child will help you manage their symptoms better as their parent and react correctly under challenging situations.
